Eighteenth Street (18th Street) is a gang originating in the Pico-Union District of Los Angeles. It is one of the gangs frequently mentioned in a transnational context and often referred to as a mara—a type of sophisticated gang—due to its presence in El Salvador and other parts of Central America. If applied to MS-13 and Barrio 18 in the northern countries of Central America, members of these gangs identify and recognize their membership, these groups have evolved into semi-structured organizations, involved in multiple crimes, and identify with their gang’s moniker.[10]
