Thus, marine biodiversity conservation aims to maintain or restore genetic, population, species, habitat, community, and ecosystem diversity on all scales. This is not always possible, however, as some species have already disappeared, and many ecosystems have been greatly transformed.
A recent review evaluating Arctic ecosystem responses to climate change (Wassmann et al. 2011) documented marine species range shifts; changes in abundance, growth, condition, behavior, and phenology; and community and regime shifts as key components of change.
