Carol Jenkins (October 19, 1947 - September 16, 1968) was an African-American woman who was murdered on September 16, 1968, by two white men in a sundown town in Indiana. Her murder remained unsolved for over thirty years until a tip led investigators to one of her murderers in the early 2000s.

Martinsville, Indiana’s most notorious sundown town, had a BLM rally, but most of the participants appeared to be from out of town.
Martinsville was once a sundown town, one of the most sinister practices in national history, in which Black Americans were violently excluded from living or even passing through. While they existed across the entire United States, sundown towns were particularly rampant in the American Midwest.
These events were the catalyst for Martinsville’s reputation as a “sundown town” to rise. Sundown towns are typically described as all-white communities that exclude Black people or other minorities using discriminatory laws, harassment, or violence.
Many of the Indiana Black Legislative Caucus, now in their 60s and 70s, remember fears surrounding Martinsville and other sundown towns. Rep. Vernon Smith, D-Gary, said he received the same message as Summers: stay out of Martinsville.
