Mathematics 124. Finite Mathematics. Course Website: http://www.math.uiuc.edu/math124/ Text: \Methods of Finite Mathematics" by Brown & Sherbert bound with Course Activity Packet, available at the TIS bookstore. This is an introduction to set theory, probability, linear systems, and matrices.
Analyses of the mathematical issues and methodology underlying elementary mathematics in grades K-5. Topics include sets, arithmetic algorithms, elementary number theory, rational and irrational numbers, measurement, and probability. There is an emphasis on problem solving.
Topics for this course include operations on sets, counting principles, permutations and combinations, linear equations, mathematical probability, matrices, mathematics of finance and some hands on probability distributions such as normal and exponential distributions.
An entering student in mathematics should have academic preparation to enroll in MATH 220 during the first semester. Admission to MATH 220 requires an acceptable ALEKS score.
