Matthew has given a lengthy summary of the teaching of the Christ, and he now supplements it by a summary of his daily work. He is not concerned with the chronological connexion of the incidents here narrated, for this is evidently to him a matter of but secondary importance.
Matthew 8 reveals Jesus as the authoritative figure with power over physical and spiritual realms. It also underscores the potent role of faith in activating miracles. While demonstrating His power, Jesus also reminds us of the cost and commitment necessary for discipleship.

What does Matthew 8:1 mean? Over the previous three chapters, Matthew presented Jesus' teaching of what we now call the Sermon on the Mount (Matthew 5:1–2). Jesus had walked up to an elevated spot, likely north of the Sea of Galilee near the town of Capernaum.

1. He rebuked the disciples ; Why are ye fearful, O ye of little faith? He does not chide them for disturbing him with their prayers, but for disturbing themselves with their fears.
