15 Μαΐ 2007 · One part of the field of life's meaning consists of the systematic attempt to clarify what people mean when they ask in virtue of what life has meaning. This section addresses different accounts of the sense of talk of “life's meaning” (and of “significance,” “importance,” and other synonyms).
The Prussian philosopher romantically defined sex as “the reciprocal use that one human being makes of the sexual organs and capacities of another…” (The Metaphysics of Morals, p.96). He went on to conclude that once a couple had exchanged vows, they have the exclusive right to use the sexual organs of the other person.
Kierkegaard insisted that through concentrating on Romantic love, we develop a narrow and impoverished sense of what love can actually be. Love is not, Kierkegaard insisted, the special excitement we feel when in the presence of someone unusually beautiful, pure, clever or accomplished.
Ferry argues that in their place, love is the only ideal that has transformed human lives in significant and unrecognisable ways, by permeating both the private and public spheres. He holds that love has become the central value in society, the new principle of meaning and the good life.
