Country calling codes, country dial-in codes, international subscriber dialing (ISD) codes, or most commonly, telephone country codes are telephone number prefixes for reaching telephone subscribers in foreign countries or areas via international telecommunication networks.
Each NPA is identified by one or more numbering plan area codes (NPA codes, or area codes), consisting of three digits that are prefixed to each local telephone number having seven digits. A numbering plan area with multiple area codes is called an overlay. Area codes are also assigned for non-geographic purposes.
The North American Numbering Plan (NANP) divides the territories of North America into Numbering Plan Areas (NPAs), which are encoded numerically with a three-digit telephone number prefix, commonly called the area code. There are 383 area codes in the North America across United States, Canada.
For example, a typical SSN follows the format of “AAA-GG-SSSS,” where A represents the Area number, G represents the Group number, and S represents the Serial number. The format of the numbers has been relatively unchanged since the assignment of the first Social Security numbers back in 1936.
