20 Δεκ 2023 · This first chapter deals with the nature of health and disease, and the complex medical institutions and systems that modern societies have put in place to prevent, diagnose and treat illness. We give a short, introductory overview of health and disease and equity of healthcare.
We begin this module by examining some of the economic forces that shape the healthcare system. The standard theory of how markets work is the model of sup-ply and demand, in which buyers and sellers are guided by prices to an efficient allocation of resources. Yet, as we will see, the market for healthcare deviates from this model in many ways.
· Systematically explains the concepts that have preoccupied medical sociology from its inception, and which have shaped the field as it exists today. · Includes new entries, such as pandemics and epidemics, the environment, intersectionality, pharmaceuticalization, medical tourism and sexuality.
INTRODUCTION. Given the broad and eclectic nature of the sociology of health and medicine, any account needs to attend to the substantive research topics as well as the theoretical frameworks that have underpinned or justified the approach to research.
Sociologists study health and illness not only because they are intrinsically interesting, and go to issues at the centre of human existence – pain, suffering and death – but also because they help us to understand how society works.
