In Tennessee, medical waste management is regulated by the Department of Environment and Conservation through the Division of Solid Waste Management. Specific regulations include proper segregation, packaging, labeling, storage, transportation, treatment, and disposal of medical waste.
24 Φεβ 2024 · The Tennessee Department of Environment and Conservation (TDEC) oversees medical waste management in the state. Healthcare facilities must comply with TDEC’s regulations, which include registering with the department and following its guidelines for medical waste disposal.
Guidelines for medical waste/solid waste disposal can be found in Tennessee’s rules and regulations 0400-11-01-.01. These regulations also include a number of chapters, beginning with definitions and moving on through requirements for disposal approval, certificates, recertification, fees, variations, and waivers.
This procedure is intended to prevent harmful exposure to bloodborne pathogens and comply with federal and state regulations for the management of bloodborne pathogens and regulated medical waste (RMW).
Persons who wish to dispose of special (medical) waste in a permitted landfill or have the special waste processed in a permitted processing facility require a special waste approval from the Tennessee Division of Solid Waste Management (SWM).
