Archaeological research and ancient records have been combined in this work to provide a comprehensive account of the buildings of Merv, an oasis city in the middle of the Turkmenistani desert.
In the medieval period, the city of Merv in the Murghab Delta (modern Turkmenistan) formed a crucial waypoint for crossing the Karakum desert, and the city flourished as one of the largest urban centres in the world.
The reason for Merv’s long and distinguished history can be accounted for by its strategic position in a large and fertile oasis in the Kara Kum desert in present-day Turkmenistan (Figures 1 and 2). Today the oasis supports a population in excess of a million.
