Is it the Fractal audio systems, instead of amps and pedals, that they use at live shows, that’s taking away that crunch tone from the 90s?
Not surprisingly, guitarists from total novices to seasoned experts have tried, and often failed, to figure out exactly what it is about Metallica’s amp settings, amps and guitars that produces their unique tone.
The clean tones are pretty standard. You can expect to find them with a flat EQ and lower gain setting. If you have an amplifier without a gain knob on the clean channel, then set the treble and bass around 6 and mids to 7. This should be a nice, lush tone with most amps. Fender amps will do great when it comes to capturing these clean tones.
Both James and Kirk are known for using Roland JC120's for the clean sound on records. I know James had a custom JC120 head for his rig for live shows as well. I'm pretty confident it's that amp, probably with some extra effects. There should be plenty of information if you google Metallica Roland JC 120. Reply.
20 Σεπ 2022 · This amplifier has been James Hetfield’s clean tones ever since Metallica toured with The Cult in 1989 and saw Billy Duffy using them. The JC-120 is really two 60-watt amplifiers in one, and has a lush onboard chorus. As a standalone amplifier, it is loud with heaps of headroom and detail.
