We identify five privacy paradigms that have shifted the ethical salience of privacy research from merely a focus on the human individual through a future of privacy discourses among artificial systems apart from human experiences (Fig. 1).
We examine these eras of privacy from an ethics perspective, arguing that as contexts expand from the individual, to internet, interdependence, intelligences, and artificiality, they also reframe the audience or stakeholder roles present and broaden the field of ethical concerns.
This chapter will focus on the most important and influential ethical theories of privacy. First, some of the important conceptual distinctions that figure prominently in the ethical literature on privacy will be discussed. Here, the definition and function of privacy are discussed.

Taken together, the metaphorical frames highlight two key concerns of individuals: their struggle for control over a dominating future, on the one hand, and the problem of trust in collective means of privacy protection, on the other hand.
