Communication privacy management (CPM), originally known as communication boundary management, is a systematic research theory developed by Sandra Petronio in 1991. CPM theory aims to develop an evidence-based understanding of the way people make decisions about revealing and concealing private information.
It is known to help people understand complex topics, communicate efficiently, and influence others. In this paper, we provide a review of the literature on the utility of metaphor, describing key findings and controversies while underscoring recent experimental and theoretical advances.
People believe they own their private information. This ownership is marked by a line, a metaphorical boundary between public and private. When the metaphorical boundary is very thin and permeable, people are more likely to disclose private information.
