Structure of Ethers. Ethers are a class of organic compounds that contain an sp 3 hybridized oxygen between two alkyl groups and have the formula R-O-R'. These compounds are used in dyes, perfumes, oils, waxes and other industrial uses. Aliphatic ethers have no aryl groups directly attached to the ether oxygen.
CH 3-CH 2-O-CH 3 is called ethyl methyl ether or methoxyethane. The smaller, shorter alkyl group becomes the alkoxy substituent. The larger, longer alkyl group side becomes the alkane base name.
20 Μαΐ 2021 · Simple ethers have simple common names, formed from the names of the alkyl groups attached to oxygen atom listed alpagbetically, followed by the generic name ether. For example, CH 3 –O–CH 2 CH 2 CH 3 is methyl propyl ether.

Solution. The carbon groups on either side of the oxygen atom are propyl (CH 3 CH 2 CH 2) groups, so the compound is dipropyl ether. Its IUPAC name is 1-propoxypropane. The three-carbon group is attached by the middle carbon atom, so it is an isopropyl group. The one-carbon group is a methyl group. The compound is isopropyl methyl ether.
