Moreno-Garcia has put together a pretty classic gothic novel, but I found it had a "missed it by this much" quality that left me dragging my feet when it came to reading it. Noemí Taboada, glittering debutante from Mexico City, is sent high up into Mexico's mountains to check on her cousin Catalina.
The reviews would have you believe that Mexican Gothic has Shirley Jackson/ Henry James prose, is steeped in Mexican folklore, and has a twisty and unbelievably imaginative plot. I felt like a crazy person reading this book—it is precisely none of those things!
