The Fisheries Division works to preserve and enhance Michigan's fish populations, as well as other forms of aquatic life. This is done through monitoring and studying by biologists specialized in the field of fisheries science .
The Michigan Department of Health & Human Services releases Eat Safe Fish Guides annually in the spring and emergency advisories as needed. Fish across the state are tested for PFAS (per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances). Additionally, they are tested for other chemicals such as mercury as all fish have some amount of mercury.
