I played some of my games from the SD card in my tablet PC's integrated slot that sits on a USB 2.0 bus with a glorious read speed of about 10 to 15 megabytes per second. Most games don't really like it, but outside of load times I haven't found one that outright refused to work yet.

UPDATE: For anyone who may find this in the future, the answer seems to be 128GB per card. I tried several different adapters and several different memory cards of various capacities. Exactly zero 256GB cards worked on any of the adapters. Many, but not all, of the adapters work with 128GB cards.
