Definition. The Middle Colonies were a region in colonial America that included New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, and Delaware. This region was characterized by a diverse population, fertile land, and a mix of agricultural and industrial economies, making it distinct from the New England and Southern colonies.
By 1775 the thirteen American colonies east of the Appalachians were inhabited by a burgeoning population of two million whites and half a million blacks. The white population was increasingly a melting pot of diverse ethnic groups including Germans and the Scots-Irish.
