Pop-tops are the ultimate camper accessory. Sitting low to the roof of your vehicle when not in use, they don’t affect fuel consumption or access to low areas like a high-top does; when parked, simply turn the latches, push up, and you have instant headroom and natural light.
There are many roofs available on the market as M1 crash tested, and some TUV approved pop tops, which are advertised as “DIY pop top kits”. However, I personally wouldn’t feel comfortable driving a vehicle that I know any old dick or harry has cut the top out of themselves.

High tops. Poptops are cool, but high tops have their advantages: You can stand up in the van any time – no need to pop the top first. High tops can be insulated. You can build cabinets into the space of a high top, greatly increasing your storage space. Stealth camping can be a bit easier.
