Most of the indigenous people who once inhabited land in what is now Missouri were forced to leave and resettle in Indian Territory (present-day Oklahoma, Nebraska, and Kansas) during the Indian Removal Act of 1830.

According to Osage oral tradition, the tribal group moved to the lands of presentday Missouri from the Ohio Valley as part of a larger group of Dhegiha-speaking Sioux, which included the Omaha, Quapaw, Ponca, and Kaw, or Kansa. The Osage were a semi-nomadic prairie culture, and successfully combined hunting, growing, and gathering.

  5. The Osage language is part of the Dhegiha-Siouan family, which also includes the Kaw, Omaha, Ponca, and Quapaw. A long time ago, they lived along the Ohio River as one people. Around 400 to 500 AD, the combined group migrated down the Ohio to the confluence with the Mississippi River.
