The pharmacological actions of citicoline in the central nervous system seem to be pleiotropic and involve, amongst other things, modulation of some kinases and sirtuin-1. However, our understanding of the mechanisms involved is, at most, fragmentary.
Citicoline is a nootropic nucleotide agent with a favorable effect on the augmentation of human memory and cognitive function. Thus, the purpose of this study was to determine the effect of citicoline on human vigilance, visual working memory, and oxidative stress using healthy volunteers.

Prior to testing the effects of citicoline, the memory performance of the participants was compared to that of 24 younger persons (15 male and 9 females, mean age 29.20 years, mean Mini-Mental Score 34.41), and the memory of the older group was significantly less efficient in all 5 tests (P<0.001, except of P<0.005 in word recognition test).
