First thing to decide is what role you want to fill, monks can be very good tanks or damage dealers. For tank builds: You'll want to be DEX based and use Weapon Finesse + Agile Amulet of Mighty Fists for some modicum of damage. Your damage will be VERY poor at the start of the game, Pirhana Strike can add some damage later on.

This build is a tank build as it is what monk does best. Once you get a Dex to damage neck you will be a solid damage dealer. Make sure you are using bracers or mage armor whichever is better at the time. There was one reply hating on monks so let me make this clear monk is perfectly fine.
