The Greater Than (>) and Less Than (<) Signs. The greater than sign (>) is used to show that the number to the left of the sign has a higher value than the one on the right. The less than sign (<) is used to show that the number on the left of the sign has a smaller value than the one on the right.

Greater than (>) and less than (<) symbols, or more than sign and less than sign, are used to show the relative size of a set of numbers. The wide end of the symbol always faces the larger number, e.g. 25 > 10.

If you see 5 < 8, imagine the < sign as a little alligator mouth about to chomp down on some fish. The mouth is pointed at the 8, which means that 8 is more than 5. The sign always tells us the relationship between the first number and the second, so 5 < 8 can be translated to “5 is less than 8.”
