1 Φεβ 2020 · The mosaic inference procedure starts by modelling all characters under a unified phylogenetic model, in which branch lengths represent morphological disparity. The algorithm then splits traits with divergent patterns in disparity into their own suites and then greedily merges these suite fragments until the AIC score ceases to improve.
Mosaic evolution, whereby transitional forms display a mixture of primitive and derived features, is nowadays recognized as a ubiquitous pattern of macroevolutionary change. Less known is that this expression was coined by Gavin de Beer in 1954.
These new fossils, dates, analyses, and interpretations lead to confirmation and refinement of the mosaic scheme of human evolution as proposed by early evolutionists such as Lamarck, Haeckel, and Darwin.
With mosaic evolution, a major morphological and behavioural transition of a trait (for instance, bipedalism in hominins) can occur through several adaptive solutions in different species and even genera, each being a different combination of primitive and derived sub-traits.
