Also, 68.0% of evening high schools provide school meals, and in recent years, some full-time high schools have started to provide school lunches.
The lunches are based on the washoku, or traditional Japanese meal structure, which includes rice, soup, and ichijūsansai (three side dishes) composed of a balance of carbohydrates, protein, and fiber. At school, white rice is served three to four times a week, alternating with pasta or bread.
