Acetic anhydride can be obtained directly by liquid-phase oxidation of acetaldehyde. The peracetic acid formed from oxygen and acetaldehyde reacts under suitable conditions with a second molecule of acetaldehyde to form acetic anhydride and water .
Acetic anhydride, or ethanoic anhydride, is the chemical compound with the formula (CH 3 CO) 2 O. Commonly abbreviated Ac 2 O , it is the simplest isolable anhydride of a carboxylic acid and is widely used as a reagent in organic synthesis .

28 Οκτ 2024 · At a temperature of -73.1 °C, acetic anhydride undergoes a solid-to-liquid phase transition (melting point). On the other hand, it boils at 140 °C under a pressure of 101.3 kPa (boiling point). Acetic anhydride demonstrates miscibility with polar solvents and exhibits solubility in cold alcohol, albeit with a slow decomposition rate.
12 Φεβ 2024 · Acetic anhydride is a colorless organic liquid with the formula (CH 3 CO) 2 O and the simplest example of a carboxylic acid anhydride (the simpler formic anhydride is too unstable to exist as pure substance). It is a very useful reagent in organic synthesis.
Structure: CAS Number: 108-24-7. Molecular Weight: 102.09 g/mol. Appearance: Colorless liquid. Melting Point: -73 C. Boiling Point: 138-140 C. Density: 1.08 g/mL at 20 C. Acetic anhydride (Ac2O) is a liquid with a strong acetic acid smell (acetic acid is liberated during the hydrolysis of acetic anhydride by moisture in the air).
