The Congress reduced France to its 1789 borders. A new kingdom of Poland, under Russian sovereignty, was established. To check possible future aggression by France, its neighbours were strengthened: the Kingdom of the Netherlands acquired Belgium, Prussia gained territory along the Rhine River, and the Italian kingdom acquired Genoa.

The Congress of Vienna achieved a remarkable stabilization of Europe, and was successful in preventing major conflicts for nearly a century until the outbreak of World War I. After decades of continuous warfare brought about by the Napoleonic Wars and the French Revolution, the European powers maintain relative peace on the continent.
Under the Concert of Europe, the major European powers—Britain, Russia, Prussia, Austria, and (after 1818) France—pledged to meet regularly to resolve differences. The goal was not simply to restore old boundaries but to resize the main powers so they could balance each other and remain at peace.
