The imposing Neo-Renaissance building Narodni muzeum (National Museum in English) sits on the site of a former gate of the old wall of Nové Mesto. The Horse Gate, delimited Wenceslas Square until it was demolished in 1875.
Originally named the Patriotic museum of Bohemia, the National Museum of Prague was founded in 1818 by Kašpar Maria Šternberg, a paleontologist. Designed by Czech architect Josef Schultz , the astonishing Neo-Renaissance building of the National Museum was inaugurated in 1891.
National Museum. Located in one of the most famous buildings in the city, the Prague National Museum (official name Národní Muzeum) is the most important in the Czech capital. The neo-renaissance building was constructed between 1885 and 1891 by the renowned archictect Josef Schulz, the same architect that designed the State Opera in Prague.
Looming above Wenceslas Square is the neo-Renaissance bulk of the National Museum, designed in the 1880s by Josef Schulz as an architectural symbol of the Czech National Revival. Its magnificent interior is a shrine to the cultural, intellectual and scientific history of Czechia.
