Step 1 – You will need to visit Mahogany Town. The town is situated east of Route 42. Step 2 – Traverse through Route 43 until you reach Lake of Rage’s destination. Step 3 – Go into the water and fight with the Red Gyarados, who will be in the middle of the lake. Step 4 – Once you defeat the Gyarados, you will be able to get the Red Scale item.
This item, when held by a Pokémon, allows it to earn half the EXP gained from defeating a Pokémon, regardless of if it was used in battle or not. In Pokémon X & Y, the item is now a Key Item and can be turned on or off. Doing so results in all Pokémon receiving the EXP.
