18 Απρ 2022 · Once rare in Illinois, pelicans have been visiting the Refuge Complex for only about two decades. Their presence is largely due to wetland restoration along their migratory route. The recent abundance of the invasive Asian carp has also attracted pelicans to follow this new food source.
Nelson Lake is part of a 250-acre marshland, protected within the bounds of the Dick Young Forest Preserve in Batavia, Illinois. The white pelican is one of a variety of different birds that can be found on or around the lake during spring migration.

Looking forward to the return of the American White Pelicans to Illinois in a couple of months. Locally, the Dick Young Forest Preserve in Batavia is a great place to see them before they head north, usually in the month of March. But there are many places within Illinois you can enjoy them.

Nelson Lake spans 40 acres, making it a prime destination for migrating ducks and geese in the spring and fall. Rarities like loons and scoters also use the lake occasionally. For the past four years, during the first week of April, a flock of American white pelicans has visited.
