There are plans to replace the current airport with a new one located south of Kigali on the south side of the Nyabarongo River in Bugesera. A new airport location is needed as the existing airport does not allow for upgrades such as additional runways and other facilities.

A new $2 billion airport is being constructed in Rwanda's Bugesera District, 40 kilometers south of the capital city, Kigali. The new airport, set to be completed in 2026, will have a 130,000-square-meter main terminal building and a dedicated cargo terminal capable of handling 150,000 tons of cargo per year.
3 ημέρες πριν · The new airport will complement the Kigali International Airport, fulfilling the needs of Rwanda’s growing air passenger and cargo traffic. Designed as a full-service international airport, Phase 1 will have capacity for 1.7 million passengers per year, increasing to 5.5 million passengers by Phase 5.
