    The easiest way to file your application, provided you are at least age 55, is online through your MyNYSTRS account. Log in to your account and navigate to My Retirement/Application for Retirement. You can save and store data as you go, so you don’t need to complete the application in one sitting.

  4. Visit the New York City Teachers' Retirement System at nyctrs.org. Your tier depends on when you first joined the retirement system. Under the existing Retirement & Social Security Law all teachers and teaching assistants who joined on or after Sept. 1, 1983, are in Tier 4.

  5. If you were previously a member of any public Retirement System in New York State you may be eligible to retire based on your previous membership date and tier. To apply for tier reinstatement, please complete this section.

  6. If your membership is optional and you do not wish to join the Retirement System, do not complete this application. Warning: If you are receiving or are about to receive a pension from another New York State or New York City public retirement system, contact us directly before enrolling in NYSLRS.

  7. As a new employee of the State University of New York (SUNY), you can enroll in a retirement system, however, your job classification will determine in which of these systems you are eligible to participate. For more information about your eligibility, please check with your Benefits office.
