The Canada lynx is like a gray ghost of the North—elusive, evading human contact. It stands about 20 inches (51 centimeters) tall at the shoulder but weighs about 20 pounds (nine kilograms)—scarcely more than a large house cat.
The bobcat (Lynx rufus), also known as the red lynx, is one of the four extant species within the medium-sized wild cat genus Lynx. Native to North America, it ranges from southern Canada through most of the contiguous United States to Oaxaca in Mexico.
Lynx were extremely rare in Newfoundland prior to the introduction of the snowshoe hare in the mid-nineteenth century. Since then, lynx numbers have ranged from abundant to scarce in response to the snowshoe hare population.
6 Μαρ 2012 · Distribution and Habitat. Lynx inhabit northern mainland North America and Newfoundland, and occur accidentally on Baffin Island. Once found throughout Canada, they have now been eliminated from settled areas in the south.
