Ammoniacal nitrogen (NH 3 –N) is a measure commonly used for testing the quantity of ammonium ions, derived naturally from ammonia, and returned to ammonia via organic processes, in water or waste liquids.

Ammonia is a colorless gas with a chemical formula NH 3. It consists of hydrogen and nitrogen. In its aqueous form, it is called ammonium hydroxide. This inorganic compound has a pungent smell. In its concentrated form, it is dangerous and caustic. The NH 3 chemical name is ammonia.
The ammonia molecule has a trigonal pyramidal shape, as predicted by VSEPR theory. The nitrogen atom in the molecule has a lone electron pair, and ammonia acts as a base, a proton acceptor. This shape gives the molecule a dipole moment and makes it polar so that ammonia readily dissolves in water.
17 Μαΐ 2023 · Water cycle, also known as the hydrologic cycle, involves a series of stages that show the continuous movement and interchange of water between its three phases – solid, liquid, and gas, in the earth’s atmosphere. The sun acts as the primary source of energy that powers the water cycle on earth.
27 Οκτ 2022 · Solids, liquids, and gases are the three states of matter commonly found on earth (Figure \(\PageIndex{1}\)). A solid is rigid and possesses a definite shape. A liquid flows and takes the shape of a container, except that it forms a flat or slightly curved upper surface when acted upon by gravity.
Ammonia is a compound of nitrogen. NH 3 is a colorless , quite poisonous gas with a pungent odor. It dissolves very readily in water with the evolution of heat. In solution ammonia forms ammonium hydroxide NH 4 OH, and behaves as a weak base. NH 3 and NH 4 OH both react with acids, forming ammonium salts.
