The distance scale on the 70-200mm (left) is under a cover, and you can see that the lens is focused somewhere between 10 meters and infinity. The distance scale on the 17-35mm (right) is on the lens’s focus ring, and you can see that the lens is focused quite close, at around 0.5 meters.
1 Μαρ 2008 · The distance scale helps you verify the focus of your subject. In fact in cinematography (because focus is ALWAYS DONE MANUALLY), we use the distance scale to place the chosen subject in focus versus focusing by eye.
On this lens there are two numbers—3.5 and 5.6, which means it's a variable aperture lens: the f/stop varies as you zoom the lens. The f/stops are always indicated as fractions on the lens, by the way—that's why you always see them start with a 1, like 1:3.5-5.6.
