8 Αυγ 2023 · Nasolacrimal duct obstruction (NLDO) or dacryostenosis is the most common disorder of the lacrimal system, and approximately 6 to 20 percent of newborns exhibit symptoms of this condition.
15 Νοε 2015 · The primary symptoms are epiphora, which result from backflow of tears due to blockage of the duct, and periocular crusting and discharge due to infection of the lacrimal system (Figure 1). This dacryocystitis in infants with NLDO is typically low grade, and the organisms are usually normal flora.
Signs and Symptoms. A history of tearing, mucous discharge and epiphora of one or both eyes is typical with concordant increased tear lake, mucous or mucopurulent discharge, and epiphora found on exam. . When pressure is applied over the lacrimal sac, there may be reflux of mucoid or mucopurulent material from the punctum.
Nasolacrimal duct obstruction is the obstruction of the nasolacrimal ducts (better known as the tear ducts) and may be either congenital or acquired. Obstruction of the nasolacrimal ducts leads to the excess overflow of tears called epiphora. [2]
Besides epiphora, patients will usually complain of symptoms related to the secondary cause of the NDLO, and these symptoms vary significantly based on the etiology. For example, patients with obstruction secondary to infection may also complain of eyelid swelling, erythema, or pain.

What are the signs/symptoms of tear duct obstruction? Blockage of the drainage system causes tears to well up on the surface of the eye and overflow onto the eyelashes, eyelids, and down the cheek. This usually shows up within the first month of life. The eyelids can become red and swollen (sometimes stuck together) with yellowish-green discharge.
