NOAA Fisheries requires fishermen and dealers to obtain federal permits if they fish for, sell, purchase, or import Atlantic highly migratory species (HMS), which include tunas, billfish, swordfish, or sharks.
The Atlantic Highly Migratory Species (HMS) Permit Shop makes it easy to apply for and renew the following federal vessel permits required to fish for Atlantic tunas, billfishes, swordfish, and sharks: Atlantic HMS Angling Category; Atlantic HMS Charter/Headboat Category; Atlantic Tunas General Category; Atlantic Tunas Harpoon Category
To obtain this permit, you must complete an application, submit supporting documentation, and pay the application fee. If you want to include a shark endorsement on your permit, you will also have to watch a short video and answer several shark identification questions.
2 Μαΐ 2021 · Vessels must have a valid HMS Angling or HMS Charterboat/Headboat permit to fish for Atlantic bluefin tuna. The permit covers everyone fishing on that vessel. Tournament vessels may instead fish for bluefin with an Atlantic Tunas General category permit. Buy or renew a permit.

To apply for or renew an Atlantic tunas or HMS vessel permit, visit hmspermits.noaa.gov or dial (888) 872-8862. Customer Service for the Automated Permitting System can be reached by pressing “0” from the main menu. For an Atlantic tunas dealer permit, call the NMFS Greater Atlantic Permit Office at (978) 281-9370.
