The D-Day Invasion of Normandy on June 6, 1944, was an immense undertaking involving nearly 6,939 Allied ships, 11,590 aircraft, and 156,000 troops.
Because of her flat bottom, which gave the ship a draft of only 1½ feet forward when empty and 4 to 7 feet when fully loaded, she could steam right up onto a beach despite her great size and discharge her cargo through massive bow doors.

The Normandy beaches, particularly Omaha Beach, saw intense fighting, but the Allies were able to establish a beachhead and eventually break through the defenses.
