Hickory trees hold an important place in the forests and landscapes of North Carolina. Several hickory species are native to the state and provide ecological, economic, and aesthetic benefits. Hickories are prized for their extremely hard, dense wood and delicious edible nuts.
The Shagbark Hickory is a large deciduous tree that is native to eastern and central USA and parts of Canada. It is found in NC mainly in the Piedmont area, but sporadically in the mountains and coastal areas. It may grow 70 to 90 feet tall with a 50-70 feet spread.

Host plant for Banded hairstreak butterfly and many moths including the luna moth. It supports Hickory Horndevil (Citheronia regalis) which have one brood and appear from May to mid-September. Adult Hickory Horndevil moths do not feed.
Carya ovata, the shagbark hickory, is a common hickory in the Eastern United States and southeast Canada. It is a large, deciduous tree, growing well over 100 ft (30 m) tall, and can live more than 350 [3] years. The tallest measured shagbark, located in Savage Gulf, Tennessee, is over 150 ft (46 m) tall [citation needed].
Bitternut Hickory is a tall, slender, cylindrical deciduous tree with a broad pyramid-shaped crown. It is native to North Carolina and usually found on moist, rich soils in relatively open areas where the tree can find sun.
Mockernut hickory is most abundant southward through Virginia, North Carolina, and Florida, where it is the most common of the hickories. It is also abundant in the lower Mississippi Valley and grows largest in the lower Ohio River Basin and in Missouri and Arkansas.
