The religions practised in Northern Europe today are a mix of Christianity and indigenous paganism. The dominant religion is Protestant Christianity, which is followed by around two-thirds of the population. There are also significant numbers of Catholics, Muslims, and Jews living in the region.

Traditionally, the religion of Islam has dominated only a few areas of Europe near Africa, the Middle East, and Asia. But today, Muslim communities throughout Europe are growing through immigration and a high birthrate. Islam is the religion of less than five percent of Europe’s population.
This paper presents the latest advancements of an ongoing interdisciplinary project entitled ‘Pre-Christian Religions of the North’ (PCRN) which aims at reevaluating previous understandings of pre-Christian beliefs in early medieval Northern Europe.
