The Appellate Division has the power to review issues of both law and fact in civil and criminal matters. The Appellate Division hears appeals from the State's trial courts, including Supreme Court, County Court, Family Court, Surrogate's Court and the Court of Claims.
On September 16, 2024, Chief Judge Rowan D. Wilson conducted a statewide public hearing at the Court of Appeals to assess the extent and nature of unmet civil legal services needs throughout New York State in order to recommend to the Legislature and the Executive the level of public resources necessary to meet those needs.
