NYLANDER’S TEST FOR REDUCING SUGARS Nylander’s reagent contains alkaline bismuth nitrate. Reducing sugars reduce Bi3+into metallic Bi, which precipitates in form of black precipitate. Place 2 ml of a reducing sugar in the test tube. Add 1 ml of Nylander’s reagent and mix well. Then heat the test tube in the water bath for ten minutes.
How to perform the test: Two ml of a sample solution is placed in a test tube. Two drops of the Molisch reagent (a solution of -napthol in 95% ethanol) is added. The solution is then poured slowly into a tube containing two ml of concentrated sulfuric acid so that two layers form.
Our results with Nylander's reagent, in comparison with other well known sugar tests, confirm us in our opinion that it is one of clinical value. In the examination of over seven hundred urines there were only two instances in which Nylander's reaction was positive and Fehling's test negative.
