The first image above is a natural-color view acquired at 11:22 a.m. Pacific Daylight Time (18:22 Universal Time) on October 3 by the Operational Land Imager (OLI) on Landsat 8.

Our new interactive Story Map puts real data from the Refugio Beach oil spill at your fingertips. On May 19, 2015 a pipeline ruptured near Refugio State Beach near Santa Barbara, California. Over 100,000 gallons of crude oil were spilled, much of which ran down a storm drain and into the ocean.

The impact can best be described as an injury to the entire ecosystem of the northern Gulf of Mexico. It affected habitat at the coast, off the shore, and at the bottom of the Gulf.
