Spanish Fort, also known as Old Spanish Fort, Fort St. Jean, and Fort St. John (Spanish: Fuerte de San Juan del Bayou), is a historic place in New Orleans, Louisiana, formerly the site of a fort and later an amusement park.
A small fort was erected in 1701 before the founding of the city of New Orleans by the French where Bayou St. John empties into Lake Pontchartrain. The settlers sought to protect the important trade route along Bayou St. John.

29 Φεβ 2024 · The street was originally named for the Ursuline nuns. When the Spanish took over, streets received names in their language. Spanish troops were quartered on the lower side of the city, hence Barracks and Arsenal. Calle del Arsenal reverted to Ursuline after New Orleans was sold to the United States in 1803.
This open space is decorated with heraldic tiles representing 48 Spanish cities (the original tiles were a bicentennial gift of Spain in 1976; they were replaced with new ones in 2002). Other elements include a malfunctioning fountain, structures that mark the plaza’s entrances, restaurants, and other tourist-oriented uses.
