By the mid-1960s, the McLean Trucking Company had become the fifth-largest trucking company in America, with a fleet of 5,000 trucks and trailers and 65 terminals scattered throughout 20 states. The Winston-Salem terminal was considered the largest in the world when it was constructed in 1954.
These pics are what remains of the Winston Salem terminal where I worked from 1977 until the 1986 closing. These were taken several years ago and not sure if anything is left currently.
9 Ιαν 2020 · Eventually, the company’s headquarters moved to Winston-Salem, North Carolina, in an effort to be closer to one of McLean’s largest customers. McLean would come to be known as one of the pioneers of less-than-truckload (LTL) shipping.
27 Ιουν 2013 · My dad, Clyde ‘Cotton’ Norman, drove for Hennis Freight Lines out of Winston-Salem, NC in the 1950’s and early 1960’s. He also drove race cars at Bowman-Gray Stadium in Winston-Salem. If still alive my dad would be 89 years old.

10 Ιαν 2020 · I recall a McLean sleeper team pulling old Fancy Gap, one driver tied a rope to the bumper, walked in front with it across his shoulder, like he was pulling the truck. Some one made a picture, it got on the front page of the Winston Salem paper, both drivers were fired.
