The average cost per injection is $$$ to $$$$ (see Cost Key), making the overall cost comparable with that for chemotherapy. Dogs receive an initial induction series of 4 injections 2 weeks apart and then a booster q6mo. Currently, the vaccine is only available to veterinary oncologists (or internists in regions without oncologists).
The Oncept melanoma vaccine is xenogeneic DNA vaccine targeting tyrosinase. It is USDA approved for treatment of stage II to III canine oral melanoma and is also used off-label for melanomas arising in other locations and in other species.
The vaccine is administered via a Canine Transdermal Device, which delivers the vaccine without the use of a needle. ONCEPT is available through our hospital’s Oncology Department. Discuss with your oncologist if the Melanoma Vaccine is right for your pet.
5 Μαρ 2024 · Clinical trials of the vaccine are underway for three dog cancers: osteosarcoma, hemangiosarcoma, and transitional cell carcinoma. The trials are taking place at 11 sites around the United States and one in Canada, and you must contact the clinics directly to ask about enrollment, appointments, and other important restrictions.

Certain histological characteristics have been shown to bear prognostic significance and can thus prove instructive in clinical decision making.
