8 Φεβ 2016 · Speaking outside of Harry Potter specifics for a moment, I always assumed that wizard was a gender-neutral term, and that the male and female terms were warlock and witch, respectively. Warlock (noun) a man who professes or is supposed to practice magic or sorcery; a male witch; sorcerer. a fortuneteller or conjurer.
What is the female equivalent of a "warlock"? It seems that other male-only words for paranormal practitioners have female equivalents: Wizard/Witch Sorcerer/Sorceress Enchanter/Enchantress Warlock...
Sorcerer has Sorceress as a feminine variant so that's not gender-neutral. Enchanter has the seldom-used feminine version of Enchantress, so that's out too. Caster or Spellcaster are gender-neutral, as is Conjuror and Summoner, but the last two refer to a very specific type of magic.
28 Ιουλ 2018 · To denote a male human, you said "werman," and to denote a female human, you'd say "wifman." At some point during the switch to Modern English, we dropped "werman" completely, and "wifman" became "woman." Well, fun fact, "Wizard" comes from Middle English, as well, and so does "Witch."
