It is caused by the herpes simplex virus type 1 (HSV-1) or type 2 (HSV-2), and spread through contact with herpes lesions, mucosal or genital secretions, or oral secretions. Pritelivir is extremely active in cell culture and has been shown in two clinical trials to have significant activity against genital HSV infections. To date, therapy has been limited to the short-term treatment of genital herpetic infections as opposed to long-term suppressive therapy.
Acyclovir is the first choice therapeutic agent for HSV infections, including herpes genitalis. However bioavailability is only 15–30 % with oral administration. Infections of the skin and mucous membranes including herpes genitalis are treated orally in immune competent people.
