As we know today, the Philippine folk dance was shaped up by three periods: First is the pre-colonial period in which the pre-colonial Filipinos dance to appease the gods, which serves as a ritual; an example of this dance: “Tinikling”. Second is the arrival of Muslim Merchants, which are Malays.
These six volumes feature dances from diferent parts of the country, including Hispanized or Christianized dances, localized forms of European dances, as well as ethnic dances or those practiced by diferent indigenous communities in the Philippines.
Philippine folk dances can be dated back as early as the pre-colonial period which inherited by our forefathers and passed through several generations of Filipinos. These traditional dances are considered treasures of our homeland for they depict the humble beginnings of our native countrymen and serve as a symbol of national identity.

Philippine folk dances are as old as the history itself which at present generation are rarely seen. The unavailability of a framework/guideline for folk dance documentation in the country affects the preservation and propagation of our rich Filipino folk dances depicting our beloved culture, customs, and traditions.
