Protect from Melee is recommended when fighting him, and will block all damage. Dad is non-aggressive, allowing players to set up a safespot. Since his dialogue can be skipped prior to fighting, players can stand next to the entrance gate to the arena and attack Dad from a distance.
On the eastern side of the arena with the blood pool and dark squares, there's ONE dark square that lightning doesn't hit. It's the one without bushes blocking it. As soon as phase 2 started I ran there and potted up. Vanstrom paths just two squares away from that safe spot so you only need to worry about those squares.
Dad can be safespotted by standing next to the western gate, or standing where the audience is, and attacking with either Ranged or Magic (using a halberd is a good Melee alternative). Note that Dad has high Defence stats against Ranged and Magic, so it may take a little bit before you kill him.

For ref my inventory was Blowpipe/darts (for bloodveld), 2x prayer pots (4), 2 xSuper combat (4) and the rest high level food like dark crabs/manta rays etc. Maximize magic defence and crush boosts such as myth cape. Its a hard but not impossible fight, good luck!
